Museum and Gallery Listings

ART

Museums and galleries are in Manhattan unless otherwise noted. Full reviews of recent art shows: nytimes.com/art.

MARK DI SUVERO In this age of sculptures of mindlessly enlarged recognizable objects that are all size but no scale, it is great to be reminded that big can also be abstract, and that abstract at its best requires scale. Case in point is “Lowell’s Ocean” (2006), right, Mark di Suvero’s latest exercise in well-tempered largeness at the Paula Cooper Gallery. Ms. Cooper may not have built her elegantly cavernous ground floor to accommodate Mr. di Suvero ― an artist with whom she has worked on and off for most of her long career ― but sometimes it sure looks that way. His works fare so well in this setting that it has occasionally been hard to tell if the art or the space is doing the heavy lifting.
